Hot
Cams High Performance Camshafts
Hot Cams inc. manufactures high performance camshafts for
a wide variety of dirt bikes and atv's. They're the first
camshaft company to produce its own cores for the dirt
bike and atv market. This means you no longer have to
send your stock camshafts in for welding or pay
additional core charges. What Hot Cams has done is make
it incredibly easy to change out the stock cams for their
high performance cams to enjoy a substantial increase in
performance.
The Hot Cams intake and exhaust camshafts
for the Wheelbynet.com Yamaha WR250f went in with out a
problem. These camshafts use the same lash as stock to
slightly looser. You literally just drop them in! The cam
sprockets can be adjusted on these camshafts to move the
power band for different tracks. Hot Cams sells a trick
camshaft installation kit for $129.95 that we highly
recommend if you'll be adjusting the sprockets on the Hot
Cams camshafts. We used the factory indexed setting for
this test so all we had to do was "just drop them
in".
The WR's
valves were a little out of spec to begin with (tight) so
I had to change out some shims. If it wasn't for that,
the camshafts could have been swapped out in under one
hour. Instead it took a trip to the shop, and if you're
anything like me that can take the better part of an hour
or two by itself. Wow, look at that!
The break
in procedure requires rechecking the lash after a 3,000
RPM or better ride for at least 20 minutes. It's
important to not let the engine idle long on the initial
start up. No excessive RPM or lugging. After rechecking
the lash I found all the valves to be well with in spec.
I put it back together and headed out for the local Off
Road Vehicle Park in Hot Springs Arkansas. The terran at
the ORV park is a mix of extreme hill climbing to tight
twisty single track to wide open fire roads.
I pulled in
the parking lot of the ORV park at 11:35am. I had the day
fee paid, bike unloaded and gear on in under 10 minutes.
Let's just say Tim the Tool man Taylor has nothing on me
when it comes to exploring new found POWER! I could not
wait! We'll.... The Hot Cams camshafts did not let me
down. The midrange on the 250f is so strong and snappy
now that I'm pulling hills in 3rd gear that I could only
make in 2nd gear before. I can actually shift in the
middle of the up hill now and easily pull 3rd gear
without even fanning the clutch. The torque increase is
outstanding. The best comparison I can make for those of
you with WR 250f's; It's like going from WR cam timing to
YZf cam timing. It wakes the motor up. The mid range
power is almost 2-stroke snappy now. It rev's so much
quicker.
Hot Cams
camshafts are not just for racing. Everyone can benefit
from the additional torque on demand. The performance
gains make the 250f easier ride. Don't get me wrong. The
250f is probably the easiest bike to go fast on that I've
ever ridden. It's just that the Hot Cams camshafts makes
the power in the middle so much stronger and earlier, and
the top end will continue to pull as always. It's just a
lot more of a good thing!
On this nasty section of natural sandy whoops it's pretty
easy to get out of shape and lose your momentum. The new
found torque from the Hot Cams camshafts allows the 250f
to get right back on top the horsepower robbing sand and
power it back up to speed.
The power
gains are substantial, but the price is not. The
camshafts for the 250f are $159.95 each. This is a small
price for the impressive performance gains. Visit Hot
Cams inc. web site or give them a call and order your new
high performance intake and exhaust camshafts for your
make and model dirt bike or atv. All of their camshafts
have been dyno developed to guarantee improved
performance.
