Dr.D Hot
Start System
Dubach Racing Development (DR.D) is owned and operated by
former Team Yamaha rider Doug Dubach. Doug has been a
part of Yamaha's testing program since the inception of
the YZ400 pre-pro in 1996. Doug has more experience,
know-how and seat time on a YZ-F than any other rider in
the world. It is this unique background that he brings to
every DR.D product
 The Dr.D Hot Start System is a handle bar
mounted hot start button. For those not familiar with
what a hot start button is. They're found on today's most
popular 4-stroke dirt bikes. It's a mechanism on the
carburetor that allows more air to enter the pilot
circuit to aid in restarting a stalled HOT motor.
The
1998-2002 Yamaha YZ-F's and WR-F's have the hot start
button located directly on the carburetor right next to
the choke button. What Dr.D has done is put the hot start
button on the handle bars using a trick looking button
type lever operated by your right thumb.
After
testing out the Dr.D Hot Start System on our '02 WR250f
the first thought was Yamaha should have put this on the
handles bars in the first place. After all, these bikes
are intended for racing and being able to restart a
stalled motor quickly can mean the difference between
finishing third or last. Face it, if you stall your
motor chances are you're not going home with the winners check! Unless your
Kawasaki super star James "Bubba" Stewart....
Besides
allowing you to keep your hands on the bars instead of
reaching down to find the hot start button, there are
several other advantages to this system over the stock button. The best
thing is you no longer have to worry about leaving the
hot start button on. Take your thumb off the button and
it's off. Another thing is the location of the button on
the handle bars. Being on the right side it not only
frees up your left hand to use the compression release
and clutch to restart it in gear, but also with your
thumb on the button it stops you from accidentally
twisting the throttle while kicking it
over. A big no no! They kick back... ouch!
Dr.D also
makes Hot Start Systems for Honda CRF's to move the
button to the right side allowing the use of an
adjustable clutch perch. And again, it frees up your left
hand allowing you to pull in the clutch to restart it in
gear. This system reuses the existing cable.
The only
thing that needs to be said about installation is that an
untrained monkey could have it in in less than 15 minutes
so don't take it to the shop.
The bottom
line is you don't have to be a racer to benefit from the
Dr.D Hot Start System. Not having to worry about leaving
the hot start button on and causing a lean condition is
reason enough to buy one.
